In India, most
marble forms at convergent plate boundaries which are
a large area of Earth's crust and are exposed to regional metamorphism process.
Marble also forms by contact metamorphism i.e. when a
hot magma body heats gets in contact to adjacent limestone or dolostone.

Marble has grey form in it because of
impurities. But these impurities form a design in the white marble and make it more beautiful. Before metamorphism process, the
calcite in the limestone is in the form of fossil material and biological debris. During metamorphism process,
this calcite rock re-crystallizes and the texture of the rock changes. In the
early stages of metamorphism process of the limestone-to-marble transformation,
the calcite crystals in the rock are very small to become a rock.

As metamorphism
progresses, the small crystals combines and the crystals grow larger and become
easily recognizable as interlocking crystals of calcite. Re-crystallization
changes the original fossil form and sedimentary structures to form a rock of
the limestone and dolostone. This rock stone is cut into slabs of various sizes
and termed as Marble Slabs.

Marble that has been exposed to low levels of metamorphism will have
very small calcite crystals. The crystals become larger as the level of
metamorphism progresses and form various structures in the marble stone.
